What Is The Desktop?

The desktop is the main screen area of the Windows operating system. The desktop contains the icons that represents the programs you use on a daily basis; Microsoft Word, Internet Explorer, etc. There are different parts that make up the desktop. Let's take a look at those parts.


Icons, as we discussed in the last paragraph, represent the programs such as Internet Explorer and Microsoft Word. Icons are small graphical images. You can often change the icons on your favorite programs.

Quick Launch Toolbar

The Quick launch bar is a list of shortcuts to your favorite programs. You can use the Quick launch bar to open programs with a single click without having to go through the Start menu.


In computing, the taskbar is a term for an application desktop bar which is used to launch and monitor applications.

Start Menu

Gives access to the Start menu which is used to access your programs, settings, printers and more.
